A text editor or web editor will be the main software that you will need to use for creating a website. It's used for writing or editing HTML, PHP, Perl, JavaScript codes, or Rich Text Format and etc that mostly whatever you need to do on your site. There are so many good programs should you choose either free or purchased ones.
These are some of free text editor programs.

- Komodo Edit compatibility: Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix
- Crimson Editor compatibility: Windows
- Aptana Studio compatibility: Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix
- Notepad++ compatibility: Windows
- Notepad 2 compatibility: Windows
- You can also use normal Notepad that comes with Windows or TextEdit that comes with Mac but there aren't any features to help you with which would make your coding or editing harder to do. I wouldn't recommend these especially for beginners.

FTP or SFTP Client Software
A FTP or SFTP Client Software. FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and SFTP stands for "Secure File Transfer Protocol" It's used for transferring files or important data to your web hosting or server. By the way, FTP Client doesn't have secure connection but SFTP does so if it's possible, you should rather use SFTP connection instead. Although most web hosting support SFTP connection, you might have to contact them to activate this function. By the way this program is free.
The one that is recommended is FileZilla. I would consider this program as one of great FTP/SFTP Client programs. It's free, fast, and easy to use with full features. It's also popular among many people who are new to FTP. This program is compatible Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 each both 32 or 64 bit, Mac OS X, and Linux.
There is another good one Cyberduck. This one would be better for Mac users but they now released the Windows version as well. It is also free.

A Domain Name and a Website Hosting Service. The domain name is a name of a website so choose anything you like. Be creative. It can be the one that suit your business' criteria or purposes. The name of your website is not that crucially important but it's still better to pick a nice one, easy to remember which it could help you with the marketing as well. However, the reason that the name of the site is not so important because the real reason to make your site having a lot of traffics or visitors depends on how you market it. Normally the basic structure of websites are not so different so to save time, just pick the one you like and start from that. There are many free website templates that you can get. A web hosting probably have that feature for you as well like Bluehost. And if you use Wordpress.org self-hosted blog, they also have themes for you to choose from. Still don't like it? Search for it on the internet or if you want a better one, you can also look to buy one.
Pictures or images, as you know that a picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures can help your site look a lot nicer so be creative. You can take pictures or create them using some software like Photoshop. Shouldn't just search and download it from the internet because of the copyright.
